1:1 (THC:CBD) means the ratio of the amount of CBD to THC. These products come in a variety of forms, vape oils, tinctures, salves, and edibles. Many people use these products for medical purposes and recreational use.

THC is the compound in cannabis that will make you high while CBD, if isolated, won’t make you high and has therapeutic benefits. Most marijuana strains have around 18 percent THC with less than 1 percent CBD.

The Entourage Effect

The entourage effect is the theory that all the compounds in cannabis work together, and when taken together, they are more effective than taking them alone.

Studies suggest that CBD can lessen the intoxicating and potentially adverse effects of THC, while THC may contribute to or enhance the therapeutic effects of CBD. Both work in this way by eliciting responses from the human body by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. Proportions of THC to CBD can be modified to enhance marijuana’s therapeutic properties and reduce incidents of intoxication.

Many studies have been published on the entourage effect. Ethan Russo, M.D., is considered the thought leader on the topic. Dr Russo is a board-certified neurologist, psychopharmacology researcher, and former medical advisor to GW Pharmaceuticals.
